Parenting Style, Peer Pressure and Environmental Factors as Predictors of Unruly Behaviour Among Secondary School Students

Abstract

The study investigated parenting style, peer pressure and environmental factors as predictors of unruly behaviour among secondary school students. The sample consists of four hundred and eighty (480) from the selected secondary schools in Ondo state. Data was collected through self-structured questionnaires distributed to the teachers and the Counsellors. Data obtained were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and multiple regressions. Findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between parenting styles and unruly behaviour of secondary school students in Ondo State. Findings also revealed that there is a significant relationship between peer influence and unruly behaviour of secondary school students in Ondo State. Findings also revealed that there is a significant relationship between environmental factors and unruly behaviour of secondary school students in Ondo State. Findings also revealed that there is a significant joint contribution among parenting styles, peer influence, environmental factors to unruly behaviour.The study therefore recommends that parents should ensure that their wards are well trained to be able to live well and independently on their own. It was also recommended that school administrators should endeavor to continuously put in place appropriate strategies to minimize environmental factors on their students.
